SEVENS PROJECT UPDATE
We've been getting more than a few emails
demanding when this epic album will finally be released. Rest assured,
the wheels are in motion. We're working with Envision Management to make
sure the album is given a proper release. It's looking like early 2009
as the final release date.
THE OBJECTS PREPRODUCTION
Vid Cousins & Matt Lederman are finally
promising to deliver on their avant-bootyshaking-prog-math-dance-rock
extravaganza. Rumour has it that Miles Perkin and Stef Schneider have
been added to the mix. While we know that these four blokes are some of
the busiest people we know - they're all on different tours at the moment
- we're anxious to hear what they've got in store.

MOMENT FACTORY & MOONDATA & 99 CENT DREAMS
Last year, our regular visual collaborators
at Moment Factory released their feature film '99cent
Dreams'. Moondata contributed the majority of soundtrack music. Since
then, the film won the award for Best Experimental Film at the Great
Lakes Independent Film Festival and it is now set to be released on
DVD. To commemorate, the Musee D’Art Contemporain has invited us
to perform a live interpretation of the movie. The film's images will
be manipulated while a live band of LABproject regulars play elements
of the soundtrack and new material. See the trailer for the movie here.

PROJECT IN FINAL PRODUCTION MODE
Moondata has a new band and an upcoming
album! Sevens Project, the album, is finally completed. The group
is a collaborative effort between Ryhna
Thompson, Stefan
Schneider, Matt Lederman, Peter
X & Patrick
Watson. It was produced by Vid
Cousins and mixed by Vid & Amon
Tobin. It also features a wealth of guest musicians who generously
donated their talents. We don't have a proper release date set (you'll
be the first to know when it's available), but for now, you can visit
the band's myspace

LABprojects: THE FUTURE??
Many of you will have noticed that we have not had a LABproject session
since May. While this has been in due mostly to the fact that we had a
lot of other projects on our collective plate, we also felt that it was
time to take a short break. When we created the series, we never actually
expected it to last longer than a few months! At the fourth year, we want
to catch up with ourselves and take a glimpse at what we can do. We’re
happy that in the last year we were able to include more musicians and
invite friends and musical heroes to lead their own, as the entire concept
has been based on cooperation and challenging ourselves. We hope to continue
down that road and involve more and more talented musicians in guiding
their own events. We are excited for what the future of LABproject holds.
But for now, we are all going to have to wait till l2009 to find out....

LABprojects 27 - SATURDAY MAY 19
season finale
For the last LABproject before
we take a break for the summer, we're throwing everyone into the melting
pot. Free jazz, horns aplenty, electronics, wailing guitars and deep grooves
are all on the menu. With the presence of Jean-Phi Goncalves, the drummer
from Plaster and Afrodizz, there are sure to be breakneck beats, while
the addition of Sam Shalabi, a veteran of the Montreal improv scene, ensures
some cutting-edge playing. Expect the unexpected.

Sam Shalabi guitar
Andy King (Dr. Noh) trumpet
Jason Sharp (Mobius / Kalmunity) baritone sax

MOONDATA CONTRIBUTES TO MOMENT FACTORY'S "99cent DREAMS"
Moment Factory recently released "99cent Dreams", a docu-fiction that was shot over the seven continents in some of the most surreal areas all over the world. Loosely intertwined personal narratives combine in a story about 8 dreamers whose reality turns to fiction and vice versa. Moondata contributed the majority of the music for the movie. Other contributers included Patrick Watson, Amon Tobin, Freeworm, & The Notwist. You can watch numerous excerpts of the movie at www.momentfactory.com

We contributed music to an advertisement in support of Scene Quebec last summer. It was awarded the grand prize for electronic media for at the Grafika awards back in February. Ryhna Thompson, one of the chief brains behind the whole Moondata operation, takes the reigns on this LABproject to assemble a line-up that can find that place where warm tones meet harsh sounds, where beautiful melodies meet dissonant rock. Her choice of horns and woodwinds (trumpet, french horn and bass clarinet) and musicians, many of whom will be contributing to a choir of voices, are sure to create an excite an exciting collaboration amongst a number of musicians making a stop in Montreal in between their own tours.

SEVENS PROJECT ALBUM IS BEING MIXED BY AMON TOBIN
All the recording is done and producer Vid Cousins is now working closely with Amon Tobin to mix the final result. We're obviously very excited by this turn of events. By the way, if you haven't checked out Amon's most recent album, Foley Room, you best do so. It's fantastic, and features members of Sevens Project! Yes, Patrick Watson, Stefan Schneider, Ryhna Thompson, Vid Cousins and more montreal musicians all make an appearance on Amon's mad genius of an album.
MOONDATA PODCAST 13

As an interesting fact, our special guest rarely ‘plays’ live with other musicians, and this is likely the 1st (and possibly only) opportunity many Montrealers will have to see him in this format. It’s only fitting, because his soon-to-be-released album features many live musicians, a few of whom will be performing at this very show.

Moondata Podcast 10
2007 has arrived, and in the spirit of out with the old and in with the new, it's time to clean up some old files we've got lying around. Doing so provokes nostalgia as we listen to some forgotten items. So we put together this mix of some older music from the LABproject series that was in consideration for our last album SATELLITE. The theme here is how Moondata has tried to bring ambient textures to different contexts, be it 'enoisms', soul jazz, a rock ensemble, electronics or acoustic guitars. If you use iTunes, click here to subscribe. If you are using other podcasting software, check our RSS feed directly here. Enjoy!!!

NOVEMBER 8, 2006
October was a bit of a roller coaster ride. We spent a couple
of weeks in the studio with Sevens Project and a lot of guest musicians.
We ate a lot of take-out and delivery. We spent a lot of money.
We didn't sleep that much. We laughed a lot. We got stressed a lot. We
made stupid jokes. We took stupid pictures. We dropped things. Things
broke and then things got healed.
And what's the point?
Music is our mistress, and sometimes she can be vicious, but you got to love her anyways.
LABprojects 32 –- curated by Jason Sharp
Credit Jason Sharp for
putting together an all-star line-up for the 32nd edition of LABprojects.
Mr. Sharp, originally from Edmonton, has been playing in all sorts of
scenes since moving to Montreal. He has appeared in numerous local
festivals including the L'Off festival, Montreal Funk and Soul festival,
Suoni per il Popolo, the Montreal Reggae Festival, as well as jazz festivals
across the country.
For this edition of LABprojects, Jason has
taken members of his Mobius project and combined them with other members
of various jazz and funk working ensembles. Andres Vial
lays in on a number of keyboards, Josh Zubot/Crouched
Head plays double-duty on violin and warped beats and electronics,
while Kalmunity's Jahsun and Stars' Pat McGee
will brew up a fierce drum groove. Adrian Vedady is currently
THE go-to double bassist in the city, while Moondata's own Matt
Lederman will shift roles from conductor to participant in what
is sure to be a heady and exhilarating meeting of musical mind
Moondata podcast 09
In honour of the upcoming LABproject session,
Jason Sharp has donated two live tracks from his
Suoni Per Il Popolo concert this past summer. The band consists of a lot
of familiar faces: Stefan Schneider (drums), Miles
Perkin (bass), Joe Grass (guitar/pedal steel),
Andres Vial (piano), Josh Zubot (violin/electronics),
Michael Blake (soprano sax), and Jason Sharp
(baritone sax). To seal the connection to Moondata, Matt mixed the show
live, and that’s pretty much what you hear. If you use iTunes,

Sevens Project - Phase One Complete
Over two weeks, we buckled down at Breakglass Studios, and then
again at Planet Studios, to track what will be Moondata's first studio
album aka the Sevens Project record!! We're pretty
damn giddy with the results. There's only one or two more things
to do before we get to start sorting through the hours of material, and
editing and mixing. It's a fairly eclectic recording with compositions
coming in from all 5 members of the band: Matt Lederman, Ryhna
Thompson, Peter X, Patrick Watson & Stef
Schneider, with the arrangement help of Vid Cousins,
producer extraoridinaire. We'll be adding some studio pics to the
website shortly. Unfortunately the album won't be ready for some
time to come. Maybe sometime in the new year, something will leak. Who
knows?

OCTOBER 24, 2006
LABproject 32 - curated by Jason Sharp
The 32nd LABproject on November 18th is being run by our good friend Jason Sharp. Joining him will be Josh Zubot (violin / electronic beats), Andy Vial (harpsichord / keys), Jahsun (drums), Adrian Vedady (upright bass), Matt Lederman (guitar), & Pat McGee (drums). More details to be announced shortly.
Sevens Project nearly finished tracking in the studio
We spent about 5 days at Breakglass Studios last week tracking the majority of the Sevens Project full length album. This week we're at Planet Studios recording strings and grand piano. So far, so amazing! We've even convinced many of our friends to join us. Just recording the horn section was a party. We'll put up some studio pictures soon. Now we have to catch up on sleep lost due to all night recording sessions.

OCTOBER 3, 2006
LABproject 31 line-up announced - October 21, 2006
The September showcase was a blast. But now we're moving ahead with more shows and new faces. Inspired by the fact that it's running during the Festival du Nouveau Cinema, LABprojects 31 will feature a VJ orchestra - 4 VJs whose images will be mixed by conductor Matt K. Williston. Onstage will be the music orchestra - mixed and sampled live by Matt Lederman. Matt vs. Matt. No. We didn't plan it that way. For full details, check out the show section. Be on the look-out for LABproject 32 on Nov. 18th, curated by the one and only Jason Sharp.
People For Audio / Small Sails / thisquietarmy: Live @ Main Hall on Sunday October 15
All the way from Portland, OR, Small Sails (ex-Adelaide) returns for to give us more eye and ear candy. 8mm projections and minimalist songs based on post-rock and ambient musics result in emotional escapes from reality. Local multi-media band People for Audio and thisquietarmy round out the bill for what is sure to be an amazing audio/visual experience.

LABprojects takes Summer Vacation
That's right. Just like the kids playing at recess are soon to be, we're on summer vacation till the fall. We've been getting a lot of evil glances from some people who claim they need their improv fix, but you know, this break is just so we can work even harder at some new projects & new shows.
And besides! We've already booked the dates for the next batch of sessions. Check out the shows section for precise dates.
Moondata contributes to Scene Quebec
We were asked to do the music for this commercial for a cultural event taking place in Ottawa next year. You can check out the video and details at our newly built 'portfolio' page.

LABprojects session 28 - back to the Ambience & Beats
The next installation of the LAB will move us back in style to where the series started - beats, layers, pads, live electronics & melodies. We're excited to have some new faces - Killa-Jewel, Maikko (Otolab, Italy), Eric Cohen, Ouananiche (from France), as well as LAB semi-regular Sage Reynolds, and the entire Moondata gang.
Moondata receives SOCAN Foundation funding
We recently received the good news that one of the grants we applied for in order to continue putting on collaborative showcases has been approved! Be on the look-out for the Moondata Artist Series this fall. We're going to be starting with a Sevens Project CD release party sometime at the end of September 2006!
Sevens Project Recording moves to the next stage
We've tracked and edited the drums and we're working in stages to get this album done. It will definately be an eclectic record, and we're really excited with the work done so far. Big props to Vid who is acting as producer and keeping all of our crazy ideas focused.
LABprojects #27 a rollickin' success
Hot Damn! Those boys in Ideal Lovers sure can play the blues! The last LAB was perhaps the closest we ever got to a 'jam' session, breaking out the Son House & Booker T. vibes. A 3 guitar line-up complete with horns, organ and pedal-steel, the crowd at O Patro Vys was treated to a real down-home honky-tonk funk evening. We've already got a rough mix-down of it, so expect it to appear in a future Podcast...speaking of which....we should really get on doing the next one. Look for someting in a day or two.

LOVE!project aka LABprojects session 26 - Saturday February 11
This year’s Valentine Edition of LABprojects puts some of Montreal’s most musical couples together for the first time. It won’t necessarily be a musicians 'swinger’s club' on stage, but this collaboration promises some high energy dynamics, some doey-eyed interaction (Duets! Threesomes! & more!) and a highly unique instrumentation that includes a classical harpist, a jazz guitarist and a members of some of Montreal’s best indie-rock bands!
Jace Lasek & Olga Goreas (Besnard Lakes), Robbie Kuster (Patrick Watson band) & Elizabeth Powell (Land of Talk), Simon Angell & Sarah Pagé (Hhaka) , and Moondata's own Ryhna Thompson and Vid Cousins, with special guests and more!

JANUARY 16, 2006
Sevens Project starts Recording!!!
In the early days of December, Moondata's first studio project starting recording the inklings of an album. The album is being constructed using a variety of ways and means, focusing first on compositional elements, but bringing in the feelings of collaboration and improvisation predominant at the LAB sessions. Many of the results will be no doubt surpring, even to us, as the individual musicians are each responsible for a number of different ideas. The album will likely not be ready until late fall as we plan on working on it over a number of months. The core recording group is Patrick Watson, Stefan Schneider (of Bell Orchestre fame), as well as Moondata's head honchos Peter, Ryhna and Matt.
LABproject Session 25 with People For Audio - smashing success!
This past Saturday saw the start of LABprojects in 2006. Our invited guests were all the members of Montreal audio/visual group People For Audio. It was the first time any of them participated in the series and they came threw with flying colours, bringing their unique post-folk approach to the music.T Thanks to all those who came out and packed O Patro Vys on a cold winter night. We appreciate your support!
Lineup announced for the "Love LAB" - LABproject Session 26 Saturday Feb. 11 2006
